- How to express yourself verbally - verbal style and content
- How to express yourself artistically - colour and design

Dyfnant & Vyrnwy Horse Riding and Carriage Driving Project
This event was organized to familiarize tourism businesses with the facilities of this new project and to highlight the opportunities and benefits of effective partnership working.
This visit was the first of two familiarization visits developed to support and complement the Activity Tourism Seminar Event (above). It illustrated effective partnership working and innovative product development, highlighting the potential of activity tourism in Mid Wales to tourism businesses. The project itself has been developed by a number of businesses and individuals working together, in association with the Forestry Commission and the WDA toolkit group, Antur Dwy Afon. The aim of the project is to provide a quality horse riding and carriage driving resource for visitors and local people. Trails in the forest have been developed for horse riding and carriage driving together with corrals, lorry parking and an on-site building for users of the forest. The project has already attracted a number of prestigious National events for next year, which will obviously increase visitor numbers to the area.
This one day course explores the power of photographic image with practical tips on how to frame & take the best shots of your business for marketing purposes. Also covered are topics such as looking at and understanding the impact images have upon potential visitors, composing shots, using image libraries and a location shoot - a visit to one of the businesses on the course to apply the theory.
Tourism businesses across the Powys, Ceredigion and Gwynedd areas are invited to learn more about the Disability Discrimination Act's legal requirements for businesses. The day provides businesses with practical advice to meet the legal requirements and enable them to tap into the potential 8.5 million UK disabled people, estimated to have annual spend of £40 billion (Tourism for All 2004). The day features speakers from the Wales Tourist Board, Ceredigion Access and the private sector. The event can also include familiarization visits to two tourism businesses offering a quality product that is completely accessible to less able visitors.*
Over the last 10 years, online spending has soared from £1.5 billion to £13.1 billion. This one day specialized course enables attendees to see the potential for their business to increase its share in this growing market and to gain a competitive edge, as a recognized key stakeholder in the tourism industry.
This successful one day event enabled local businesses to learn about the new cycling routes being developed in Ceredigion and further a field and explore how the new cycling trails could affect business. They gained inspiration and inside knowledge from an experienced writer and keen cyclist Nick Cotton and listened to various speakers relevant to this topic, plus having the opportunity to meet other businesses, representatives from cycling associations and clubs.
Two, one day events were developed by Medrwn in partnership with Powys County Council's tourism department with Brecon Beacons National Park Tourism Growth Area Officer and the WDA groups, Brecon Action and Team Llandrindod. The exercise was undertaken by Brecon and Llandrindod tourism businesses. Brecon businesses conducted "mystery shopper" surveys in Llandrindod and visa versa to raise awareness, provide information and recruit interest regarding the IQM process among the businesses of Brecon and Llandrindod - also:
- create an ownership of the project by the businesses themselves
- encourage best practice among businesses
- provide the businesses with an opportunity to have training and awareness raising sessions
- raise awareness among businesses of customer needs and expectations
- provide businesses with networking opportunities

The one day event is particularly aimed to raise the awareness of the "Three Rivers Ride" to horse riding / trekking and accommodation providers. Presentation by "Wales on Horseback" and cookery demonstration by Ivan Langford who highlights the importance of appropriate, nutritionally balanced, good quality meals for equestrian tourists.
One day course structured to help you and your staff get the best out of all your interactions with your customers from initial contact through to departure. The course includes:

- Skills to help you really understand your client's needs and how to satisfy them

The day will have a mixture of presentation and sharing of experience and innovation!
One day event developed by Medrwn in partnership working with Brecon Beacon National Park Tourism Growth Area Officer. It supports the "Green Dragon" programme that the BBNP is helping to promote and helped to highlight this initiative as a marketing opportunity to businesses.
Held at the Primrose Awareness Trust the course aimed to increase knowledge of the environment, flora and fauna among tourism providers., improve visitor experience, increase understanding of customer expectations and make businesses more competitive, encourage networking and cluster work development, and partnership opportunity.
The course has been developed by Medrwn in partnership with BBNP Tourism Growth Area Officer to encourage networking and cluster work development and partnership opportunity. The aim is to increase knowledge of the area's geological and archaeological heritage among riding/trekking guides and consisted of a series of speakers and slide shows. Information packs are distributed to attendees. It helps to highlight this area of interest as a marketing opportunity to businesses and build on the previous activity undertaken with the equestrian businesses.
One day course aimed at raising the quality of copywriting for marketing and advertising purposes among tourism businesses. We live in an increasingly competitive world where it is hard to be noticed. Thanks to the welter of information from satellite TV, papers and magazines - not to mention the all-powerful internet - your business now struggles for attention on a global rather than local stage. As a result good writing skills are vital. Whether it be ads, brochures, websites, press releases or press releases, websites: your ability to use concise, targeted, language is critical. The course covers the use of precise and punchy text covers for maximum impact. It uses a mixture of short presentations (where interventions and questions are welcome), workshops and handouts to teach the basics of good writing.
Daniel Butler is a freelance journalist and author with a particular interest in the environment and sustainable tourism. When not writing for Country Living, The Telegraph, Countryside and the Brecon Beacons National Park, he leads guided edible wild mushroom tours in Mid-Wales. The course has been developed by partnership working with BBNP Tourism Growth Area Officer and is intended to help rectify this issue. It follows on from the previous marketing and photography courses.
This one day courses aims to help tourism businesses understand how important the 'sense of place' of an area is to visitors and why they should try to help visitors understand the heritage and culture of the area. On this particular occasion Michael Freeman from Aberystwyth Museum led the attendees on a historical tour of Aberystwyth town and provided free fact sheets and information for businesses to give to their visitors. The walk progressed to the National Library where Sion Jobbins gave an informative and interesting tour, helping everyone to understand what facilities and services the library has to offer locals and visitors. A networking lunch was held at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, where further ideas for creating a 'sense of place' in businesses and communities were discussed.
One day event aimed to increase knowledge of "Eluned's Walk" to tourism businesses - a series of walks that have been developed in and around the Brecon area, each one connected with Eluned, daughter of Brychan Brycheiniog.
The day is intended to inform and raise awareness of opportunities and issues that are relevant to tourism businesses in and around Mid Wales - Taken place in Cardigan and Tregaron so far.
The one day "Window Sales Workshop" is a flexible course which is run to help retailers make more sales. It is packed with ideas, planning tips and up to the minute sales techniques which will help you win customers and make more sales. All retailers are welcome, no matter what product you sell, potential customers are looking at your window and your competitor's window too.
- Window display demonstration. Seasonal themes with a "have a go" session.
- Creating the right impression the shop is a theatre, the window a view into your soul, insight into your business acumen and other frightening things.
- Discussions on "competition" and working together to raise the game.
- "Display for free" Found and Natural display props.
- Selling from a window display, confidence and delegation. What to look for in product, buying, display and moving stock.
- Planning, planning, and planning! Working your audience! How to plan and execute displays for a year.
- Setting staff sales targets...it's not pressure, its fun. How to manage targets, it needn't cost money to appraise and reward staff.
- Communication through display, storytelling, themes and humour.
- Stop! Look and buy. Attracting new customers. Visitors, what do they expect?.
- Monitoring sales...evaluating your ability to buy the right product. Why do it? How to do it better.

These afternoon and evening events aim to increase knowledge of the area's unique wildlife/environmental heritage and highlight business and marketing opportunities to tourism businesses. The sessions consist of training sessions, guided walks and networking opportunities. The trainer is Richard Knight who has worked as the local RSPB Warden for many years and also leads wildlife holiday breaks both locally and further a field. He has an excellent knowledge of the wildlife and natural heritage of the area and started up the local natural history group - 'Rhayader by Nature'.
Further details of the familiarization. Visit to be developed and confirmed. The course has been developed by partnership working with Rhayader 2000 and CARAD, the local community arts group. The course will encourage networking and cluster work development and partnership opportunity.
This networking and awareness raising event, was based around the natural environment and its importance to visitors and consisted of an inspiring presentation on the marine heritage coast and its inhabitants, raising awareness of the importance of Cardigan Bay within a European context. Nigel Nicholas, Ceredigion's Heritage Coast Officer, gave an update on the development of the Ceredigion Coast path and an overview was given of the importance of accessing the countryside to both locals and visitors. In addition there was lots of literature for businesses to pick up to pass onto their visitors: countryside events; footpaths; codes of conduct for the marine heritage coast and newsletters and advice sheets. After the presentations the attendees were transferred by coach to the Wildlife Park at Cilgerran for a guided tour of the marshes and a networking supper.
One day course intended to raise awareness amongst accommodation providers regarding equestrian tourist's needs. Various speakers and opportunity for all attendees to take a short horse ride to fully appreciate the activity.
Advertising is not the only way to sell yourself. Too many businesses rely on costly ads to promote their activities when simply contacting a journalist would be far better. Many firms recognize this and turn to professional agencies for help, but this is expensive and usually the 'person on the ground' could do the job much more effectively.
The course explores some of the cheapest ways to get noticed. ways to get noticed, it shows how to identify a newsworthy story, how to write and package it for maximum impact and gives tips on handling journalists. handling journalists.
Projecting a strong sense of place, attention to detail and accurate communication, are keys to a good Access Statement, and overcome the biggest barrier to access - information. Preparing a statement is an opportunity to evaluate you business and to consider and plan improvements. It shows commitment to good customer care, and provides evidence for your customers, as well as a reminder to yourself, of the distinctive holiday experience your business offers. These thoughts, and some practical tips, are shared by Colin Antwis, WTB access advisor.
This one day course aims to raise awareness within the tourism industry of the advantages of using the Welsh language and culture within their businesses. The day will be in conjunction with Menter Iaith Gwynedd. Speakers will be raising awareness on the use of the Welsh language using examples of good practise, grants available for menus and signage, holidays through the medium of Welsh for learners etc. The Welsh Language Board gave a presentation on the importance of the Welsh language to business.
The Management of information is essential for all computer users, especially those who must manage e-mail and calendar to contracts and task schedules. A 3 hour session on how to optimise the use of MS Outlook / Express for use within the tourism industry. It aims to raise computer skill levels within the tourism industry to capitalise on interactive communication methods. Improving time management through task scheduling and calendar.
With the opening of Dyfi Mountain Biking's new 'cli-machx trail', Mid Wales is fast becoming THE place for Mountain Biking. Why? Because research shows that mountain bikers are very valuable visitors - they spend around £50 per day each, every day that they stay here. A warm welcome is the best way to guarantee their return, and ensure that your business is able to benefit from these new and exiting opportunities, that are coming your way. This one day event will tell you more about the Dyfi Mountain Biking's trails, increased marketing opportunities and discuss best practice examples given by local businesses who are already cashing in on the biking boom. The aim of the day is ensure that you are fully aware of what Mountain Bikers expects from a stay in the area, help them have a quality stay to ensure repeat business again and again. 3 hour course designed to show how to add an extra dimension to a hotel, café, restaurant menu. Two Italian chefs gave a practical demonstration where attendees were able to try the prepared food and also prepare and cook some of the Italian recipes with local Welsh produce.
